The Cobbles
The most charming part of Piper’s Ferry is The Cobbles.
The Cobbles is the historical business district of Piper’s Ferry, my Victorian house (and shop) anchors one end and the ferry terminal the other.
The Cobbles is named The Cobbles for the obvious reason that red cobble paves its streets. Originally, the Cobbles was a neighborhood, which is why most of the ‘buildings’ are houses.
Then as the island became more inhabited, people in the The Cobbles began to practice the art and craft of selling from their homes, eventually leading it to become what it is today - a very popular shopping, and dining destination.
I know all the businesses and the owners within The Cobbles, many of them I’ve known for years because I grew up here. Others I know through day to day commerce or committees I belong to like our local historical society, The Guild St. Rose. Like most communities and committees, there are people who get a long and those who don’t.
I know I have my favorites, like Maeve Ashbury, Fren Fontaine, the Collinghams, the Robbins and Jack Bailey…and then are my less favorites like Suzanne Shelby.
Maeve Ashbury and I grew up here so I can hardly remember a time when I didn’t know her.
French ‘Fren’ Fontaine moved here about 10 years ago and is one of the most interesting people on the island. She came from the NYC art world and we always have a lot to talk about due to our shared interests.
More about the Cobbles in later posts.
